The Olympics: Britain in the lead.

Britains' performance at the Bejing Olympics is astounding. If you look at current geographic boundaries and gold medals, then the UK is in third place. Absolutely awesome, given that the average briton weighs 200kg and gets out of breath waiting in the McDonalds queue. Most schools have sold off their sports fields, and (thankfully), most sports teachers have been laid off. Given this background, its amazing that we excel at anything other than Sumo.

Now, since the US seems to want to spin its results to show that its in the lead (total medal count vs Gold Medals), then why not do some more statistical spinning. For instance, if you count the EU as a single superstate, analagous to the US Federation of States, we win.

Or even better, if you look at the British Empire at its peak.

Excellent stuff, and can be found here

Gravatar Image1 - I think the more correct term for empire these days would be the Commonwealth?

Absolutely amazing performance of the Great British Team worth every penny and fantastic for my morale Emoticon

Hopefully for 2012 the other disciplines will benefit from the experience of the Cycling, Rowing and Sailing teams. Apparently the aforementioned teams have directed their funding very carefully and have been ruthless in team selection.

Perhaps we could have an some kind of Olympic feature in Lotusphere 2009....

Gravatar Image2 - I agree that Britain team has achieved a fantastic result in the Bejing Olympics. I guess hiring all those Australian coaches is beginning to pay some dividends.

Gravatar Image3 - Australia ranks in the top 5 no matter how you spin it - by gold medals, by number of medals, medals per head of population or gold medals per head of population

On a weighted medal count per head of population, we are in fact #1

Aussie - Aussie - Aussie - Oi - Oi - Oi

Gravatar Image4 - Technically correct: "Australia ranks in the top 5" but more correct: Australia is fifth Emoticon

Gravatar Image5 - Then again, if you look at the ratio of total population body mass against number of medals, you probably end up way down the table....

Gravatar Image6 - Good to see you're finally accepting your status as a colony Bill.Emoticon

Gravatar Image7 - Ohh dear. Now, which chap won three golds - first time a *cough* brit has done this since nineteen-oat-cake ? Or was he a *scot*..

mmm.

And arent you technically a Brazillian, now ?

Gravatar Image8 - "Or even better, if you look at the British Empire at its peak."

But, if you weight the results by population, India would really drag down the stats of the (former) British Empire. Only one medal and over one billion in population. Emoticon

Gravatar Image9 - Granted the performance is pretty good. But long gone are the days when we could expect 4 or 5 golds in track and field.

However we should learn a lesson from China. They put together a commission with the sole goal of analysing the events which had weak competition and could be won by a very strict training regime.

Does help when you have a manpower pool the size of the whole of the Americas and the EU combined though.

Gravatar Image10 - Aye thats all well and good, cept they are medals in really boring things we need more proper sports played by proper people... so PLEASE support your local "Bog Snorkeler" (me) "Worm Charmer" "Penny Farthing Racing" "Underwater Ludo Players" and my favorite "xTreme Beer Drinking" these are proper manly sports even the inclusion of Shinty or Hurling where at the very least there is speed, skill, swearing and lots and lots of blood

Gravatar Image11 - Go 3!

Although I saw somewhere that if we look at Gold medals per head of population then New Zealand is actually top of the table and we are second.

Gravatar Image12 - God. Steve. Cool. Though I did see an 'underwater monopoly marathon', lasting 64 hours. At 10m depth. With Scuba Divers.

Only marginally more interesting than snooker, but in aid of charity.

Gravatar Image13 - But if you look at the total number of medals or even gold medals per person who owns a surf board....Emoticon
