The new Me

I've been fairly quiet of late, and not doing as much travel and conferences as I've been known to. Why ?

>During Lotusphere this year, I was in pain. I had what felt like really bad sunburn down the left hand side of my body, from the mid-thigh to my upper chest. Nasty blisters, redness, throbbing pain. It wasnt nice, and even my normal horse-strength painkillers couldnt shift it. Being the son of a fisherman however, moaning about it at the time really wasnt the done thing. I soldiered on, but during some of my sessions, it really started to take its toll. The pain basically ate away at my normal level of stamina, and so the 'wild' bill that you proably know and have bummed drinks off of in the past, wasnt really on form this year. Most folks thought I was just hung-over - which would have been more normal.

Now blokes dont go to the doctor, unless there's actually blood. At least a limb falling off. And since my Doctor is about my age, fit as hell and cycles for thousands of miles every day, I kinda avoided him as much as possible. For the last 12 years or so.. But no, this wasnt good. I called and made an appointment from the closing session of Lotusphere.. Sigh. The flight back was a bit of a bugger, and you have to feel sorry for poor Pants who had to sit beside me as I snorted, moaned and snored my way back over the Atlantic.

So after getting over the jetlag, there I was sat in the doctors examining room running through a long list of symptoms - and to his credit after wading through this mess, pronounced 'Shingles'. A nasty stress related nerve condition related to chicken-pox. And said basically that it was on the wane, take these over the shelf painkillers, stay away from stress and catch up on sleep. (Like most presenters/exhibitors/organisers at Lotusphere, sleep was a concept as opposed to reality in the weeks before Lotusphere). Sigh. And before I could make my escape, he exclaimed that he'd not seen me in a while, so would I step on the scales.. Ah.. 'One at a time' they shouted. And would I have my blood pressure taken.. And would I have various blood, urine samples.. And so forth.. Damn.. He caught me.

He did test my blood pressure a few times, as he had some difficulty believing that someone with my BP pressure could still be ALIVE. So he calmed down a bit and patiently explained that I was morbidly overweight, killer blood pressure, and that I smoked and drank too much. All of which I knew of course, sowing much confusion on the other side of the desk. Immediately, he stuck me on weight pills, blood pressure pills and ordered me to quit smoking, drinking (as much) and start exercising.

And this I've been doing fairly well since then. Members of the infamous DevLab 1 Supper club spurred me on with encouragement as I came back from the gym at the hotel, all red-faced and breathless, etc. Well, no, they waved beer and cigarettes at me, but thats what friends do.

All was well until about four weeks ago, where basically I went onto the 'superstrength' Blood Pressure pills, and crashed for two days. Slept for 36 hours, etc. Fairly horrible stuff. We're not sure if it was the BP pills, but they were changed in any case. And from that point in time, its been a fight to get back to 'normal'.

But I'm glad that two weeks of 'normal' has been achieved, and I've cleared most of my immediate to-do list (much to the relief I'm sure of the View conference organisers, who have been more than patient over the delays).

So folks. Listen to your doctor. If I cant be a good example, let me be a terrible warning.

Gravatar Image1 - Bill...Take care of yourself, my friend. Life is more important than work any day! Emoticon Sending thoughts of good karma your way!

Gravatar Image2 - Of course you knew all this Bill... You are the only person I know who has taken up smoking in "later life".

I concur with Chris, life is short and more important than work. Take it easy mate.

Gravatar Image3 - Hi Bill,

Its good that you are getting things sorted out.

Perhaps if we all go on a diet and exercise we will all become lean mean fighting Lotus machines.

I have been de-stressing over the last month or so and feling better for it.

Keep getting well,

Jaime

Gravatar Image4 - take care of yourself. I'd rather have normal Bill around for a long time vs Wild Bill for a short time.

Good for you that was a brave post! It takes balls to come out of the closet as a "bit of a wreck". I for my sins was in much the same shape but hit the low point 18 months ago. I missed the joy of shingles I however got the other bane of stress related symptoms Psoriasis.Dr's diaognis stress, fags and too much fat and salt in my diet, and BP that needed a new scale to get my values on.

Much fiddling with pills, excerise and diet got everything sort of back to normal although I now rattle for about 15 minutes in the morning after pill taking.

There are a couple of things that were both fun and helped reduced stress down to pre-management levels. Tai Chi - (although you do feel a bit of a berk practicing in the back garden when your sprogs mates come around and watch) if you do the whole concentration thing does leave you with hours of calmness for 30 mins or so of "sticking the cucumber in the donkey's ear". That's one thing.. The other is Walking. Did the Gym thing, the swimming thing and the only benefit I received was the confirmation of the belief that fat ladies should NEVER wear lycra. A chum who at 60 is fitter than I was at 20 suggested to me that walking (briskly) for 30-60 mins is as good as running. So I got into a routine of nice brisk walk on the beach, a spot of Tai Chi and a nice cup of Green Tea to end it brought me down from the stresses of the day.

The only thing left to sort out are the fags :( however i have started on Champix a Perscription only pill (yes another one) that takes away the craving. It seems to be working. I started this week (you continue to smoke in week one of the treatment) and gradually the need to smokes fades which it appears to be doing. I stop my 20 a day habit hopefully for good next Saturday. It may be worth inquiring about it if you want to give them up.

Good luck!
Steve

Gravatar Image6 - Just adding my name to the list of those who wish you well, and continued success with your efforts Bill!

Gravatar Image7 - Here as well. Bill, we don't want you to fade away. There is very few people who wish they had spent more time in the office.

Gravatar Image8 - Ah Shingles! I had a bout of that just following my 30th birthday! Not sure if it was 'Does this count as middle age' stress, or various other things going on.. I was also 18 and a half stone, did no exercise and sat at a computer pretty much every hour i was awake :) Thankfully 4 years on I'm less stressed, down to 14 Stone at the last count (Thank you SlimmingWorld!) and even do a little exercise.. though not much. It nice to be able to go to work, do a shift at the Domino-face and come home without feeling like I've just run a marathon.. or down the street given my previous fitness levels!

Gravatar Image9 - Wow - thanks folks - I was really just confessing all in order to show other folks the error of (at least one!) of my ways..

I'll have to work harder at not dying, then!

Gravatar Image10 - Take care of yourself Bill. Excessive stress might be a normal symptom on an Exchange Admin, but not on a Notes Dev! Emoticon

Gravatar Image11 - I am adding my list to the people who wish to see you around for many more years. I need to lose some weight as well, but it is a battle with stress and bad food easily available.
You take care and get well soon!

Gravatar Image12 - We want you around for a long time, so hang in there, Bill.

Gravatar Image13 - I started before sphere, but I had about the same wake up call. Most people know I went thru a cancer scare in 2000, at 25, and my body has never been the same. The significant other and I started a diet and exercise program. I am down 20 lbs since Jan 1st. My goal is another 20 by Ilug. We can toast the success in Boston and Dublin ... Emoticon

Gravatar Image14 - Since we're all waiving or collective 'poorlies' around (Emoticon) I took my persistent chest infection back to the doctors and he thinks I may have late onset Asthma. With luck and a bit of treatment I'm hoping that it won't be forever...

Hopefully there's no going back for you and by next year we'll try doing the Great North (or South) Run. So instead of Wild Bill we will have 'Well Bill'.

Keep up the good work Emoticon

Gravatar Image15 - Bill, when I talked to my Aunt about my Grandfather dying (scottish) she told me he was a "wee fat busy man" and they always die young.

I guess being wee is something we can't do much about, but weight and stress we can.

For most of my life I have been the "picture postcard" BP rating of 120/80. In the last decade the travel and bad diet have driven that up and up.

OK I don't smoke and I drink at the weekends mainly, but the weight and travel alone are enough. I'm not surprised it's really bad for you the lifestyle is a killer.

However simply the diet and excercise will bring it down massively.

Take care and don't go the way of my Grandfather.

Gravatar Image16 - OK.... I'll let that serve as my wake-up call also... Great work, Bill... keep it up.

Gravatar Image17 - Shigles, been there done that - got the scars on my back to prove it - boy do they itch sometimes.
I would suggest that you lead a 'sensible life' but as I know you quite well I can only suggest that you get a life that suits you and tell everyone else to 'bugger off'.

See you soon
Ian

Gravatar Image18 - Right then.

I realize I've backslid quite a bit since my own "wake up call" { Link } -I'm going to take your plight as a "final warning" and start working on myself as well.

I'll be praying for you my friend. Eat well, exercise, stay off the cigarettes, listen (and OBEY) your wife, and get healthy soon. I'd like you to be around for a very long time.

I'll see you next January (or perhaps sooner).

-Devin.

Gravatar Image19 - This blows! The one guy I held up as a shining example of excess without penalty, and now he's all doctorified. Argh. I guess I'll have to quit smoking and all that. Hhhhhhh...

Gravatar Image20 - Take care Bill. Life is short and work will wait. Most of us probably need to take this as a warning and start working on taking better care of ourselves, I know that I need to.

Gravatar Image21 - Thanks Bill for sharing your story with us.
For me that is a precious warning, I'm overweight too and tummy is really annoying me :( I need to change my life style too.
Take care of yourself, Lotus Notes and BlackBerry are not worth our lives ;)

Gravatar Image22 - Get well soon, Bill.

Gravatar Image23 - Bill-

Thanks for sharing that! We want you around a long long time. You're 'Wild' not because of what you do... it's who you are!

You're in my thoughts, my friend!

Many of us admire you. Some strive to be like you. How cool will it be when you make it hip to be healthy!!!
Well, Wild Bill's working to look and feel better... I guess I have to work on that also!

My wife and daughter thank you! Cheers!

Gravatar Image24 - No doubt about it; Bill's a trend-setter. Emoticon

Gravatar Image25 - Wow, that is quite a story. I wish you the best in getting better. Something did seem off at LS this year, but I just thought you had a cold or something.

My wife went through a similar situation last year with the BP. The doc scared the crap out of her. We immediatly started doing South Beach, exercising, and she was on BP pills until one day she woke up and was dizzy all day and the next day. She called the doctor and they told her to stop taking the BP pills and come in for a visit. When she came in her BP was back in normal range. The doc was confused because he thought she was going to be a lifer on BP pills. So, things can get better, just stick with the exercising and eating well (or at least better).

Gravatar Image26 - @9 Yeah, Bill, work hard at it!

I haven't shared a drink with you since '97, but I'd be sorry not to get another opportunity.

See you at LS next year, I hope.

Gravatar Image27 - I could tell you some cool stories of total hedonism, but then again I'm in the gym now too.
Glad to hear you aren't taking the old dirt nap. You know, you could back off a lot and still be way into the game.
And chin up! It's much better to be alive! I'm one of many who are glad you made it.
- Andy Emoticon

Gravatar Image28 - Bill, the amount of comments you are getting here proves that you mean a lot to a lot of people. You make working in this area a lot more interesting and its not for the lifestyle, its more for your humour and skill.
If the "ticking bomb" lifestyle that you had is now over, I'm delighted to see it gone and lets see you just be you, which I know is a good thing. You being healthy is still more interesting then most people we all know. I wouldn't be lucky enough to be presenting at these events if I didn't start with you at sphere.
So, keep the pills going and the healthy lifestyle - I will have my gym kit with me in Boston.... looking forward to seeing you in there as well as in the bar.

Gravatar Image29 - Bill,
My Dad always told me how a Scots man is educated. It's the "I tellt ya" method. Glad to see you're listening to what your doctor tellt you. Stay well my friend.

Gravatar Image30 - After my wife had shingles about 18 months ago, she insisted that I get the vaccination. Watching her struggle with it convinced me to pony up the $250.

Getting older is tough. Best of luck.

Gravatar Image31 - Bill,

After an intestinal yeast infection got out of control in 2000, I came close to being a permanent vegetable. For not the support of my family, and some good doctors, and self-discipline to make dietary and lifestyle changes, I would have never recovered. And we would have never met.

The time since then has been an amazing period in my life, including knowledge gained and new acquaintances. Take your health seriously and you will be rewarded with a longevity and a quality of life, full of good times with friends, and experiences that will always be with you.

Currently, I am much happier and have good health. Some of my younger friends are unable to keep-up with me. I wish the same good fortune for you.

I look forward to seeing you in Boston. Take care and heal well, my friend.

Ciao...

--Bill

Gravatar Image32 - Get well soon Bill, Very soon!
Remember the most difficult distance is that to your trainers. Get them on and the rest is easy.

Gravatar Image33 - Bill,

For what it's worth, I've always thought of you as a terrible warning anyway. Emoticon

Coincidentally, I stepped on some bathroom scales last night (I have no idea who left them out!) and was most displeased with the apparent results.

So I guess I now know what you're a warning of. Thanks for posting this - I'll get right onto that whole getting fitter thing...

As a reward, when you next come down to London, you can have a dram on my account. Emoticon

Gravatar Image34 - I went on competing with the cows for dinner (instead eating them). People who haven't seen me for a while say I look younger.
So off to the meadow. Get well soon. We need blokes like you around!
Emoticon stw

Gravatar Image35 - Bill - just by way of contrast to many of these comments - you big Jessy!! A few pints and a few drams will sort you out Emoticon Just not to excess.

Prohibition always fails.

Gravatar Image36 - Bill,
Funny how the big 4-Oh! has a habit of tossing a reality check in there. Glad to see that you're on the mend - maybe the swan boat race should be replaced with an actual foot race next year Emoticon Keep up the good work and hopefully by next Jan you'll look less like a weeble Emoticon
