DRM is bad for you

Our Prime Minister, a certain Gordon Brown, went to see President Obama recently. As commented previously on this blog, Brown gave Obama a pencil holder (carved from an anti-slaving ship, the sister ship of the one that ultimately became the oval office desk), and in return, Brown received a BlockBuster 25-DVD pack. Nice.

Well, it transpires that our Prime Minister- head of state of the fifth or sixth largest country in the world, doesnt understand DRM:

Alas, when the PM settled down to begin watching them the other night, he found there was a problem. The films only worked in DVD players made in North America and the words “wrong region” came up on his screen.

(from here).
Har, har, and thrice har. So the economic genius who deregulated our banking system 10 years ago doesnt even understand DRM. That the special-relationship apparently doesnt extend as far as telling our prime minister that the DVD's wont actually work. That our Prime Minister (who is apparently very very smart) didnt actually KNOW about DRM on DVD's. And that our head of state, who spends BILLIONS on spies and technology, cant figure out how to circumvent a DRM - who's solution has been printed on a T-Shirt (8 years ago?).

(holds head in hands, shakes head, fills out work permit for bikini atoll.)
