Windows XP and available memory

Whilst helping a family member (with a computer degree no less) reinstall a notes 8 client, I noticed that the memory in her laptop was dangerously low. Only 256mb. She'd been complaining about performance for a while, stripping a bunch of stuff out. "Only 256mb?" she said. "The sticker on the machine said 512mb".. "Task manager only reports seeing 256mb. Open up the wee door on the base of the laptop and see if one of the DIMM's have worked loose"...

It transpired that her son (also with a computer degree) had nicked one of the DIMMs for his laptop some time ago. "Hahaha", he said, "you took long enough to notice"...

Moral of the tale: Never allow family members access to your computer kit. And if windows goes slow, get the memory back off the thieving little toerag.

(In order to save her blushes, I wont mention who this was. But I did eMail most of her department at work.. Snicker... )
