Mobile phone (A very public number indeed) Ring, ring
Me: Good Morning, Bill Buchan
Caller: [Pause.. Hiss of international VOIP line.. ] Can I speak to [pause] William Booochun?
Me; Good Morning, Bill Buchan
Caller: Ah. Good morning. This is American Express. For security purposes, can you confirm your date of birth ?
Me: Yes of course. But before that, can you confirm that you are in fact calling from American Express ?
Caller: [pause]. Ah. No. For security purposes, we cannot divulge personal information...
Me: And you think I can ? Can you see where I'm coming from here ? You could be calling from a Nigerian Scamming Call Center?
Caller: [pause]... Ah... Can you confirm your date of birth ?
Me: Can you confirm that you are American Express ?
Caller: I can give you a number to call me back on ?
Me: Ah. See it from my point of view. Mystery voice - with no caller ID (Not that I'd trust that in any case) calls up, claims to be Credit Card company, gives callback number. How does that help?
Caller: [Pause]. Look, I'm trying to help you here.
Me: And I'm trying to keep my personal information secret to prevent credit card fraud.. Can I call you back on the number on my statement ?
Caller: Ahhh. No... Yes.. Call us back on the number on my statement..
I wouldnt mind, but I've been having this conversation with these idiots for the last four years.. Now they're actually starting to take it seriously, but of course dont have anything in place yet.
