Christmas is coming, and look what Mr Brill has in his sack...

In the Notes 6 forum, Nicola Mosca posted this question:

Has anyone some news regarding the porting of the Lotus Notes Clients for linux?

to which, Ed responded

This is slated to happen before "Hannover", folks... based on the Notes 7 code. We have code running internally, and hope to have internal beta within IBM yet this quarter.

Exciting stuff. Now, I dont believe that releasing a native notes implementation on Linux (either as "native" client or component for workplace) is going to suddenly enable a lot of Windows to Linux desktop migrations. However, I do believe that the statement of intent from IBM to migrate one of their last (and most customer-facing) platform to Linux sends an important message to the market. That is - if you're not considering saving 100-350 bucks (XP, and/or XP+Office license) per USER in your infrastructure, then nows the time to do it...
